SB 145 Protects Child Predators

Sacramento - California Democrats have introduced legislation that would place children at risk. Senate Bill 145 would shield a predator that lures a child, for the intent of having sex, from having to automatically register as a sex offender.

Senate Bill 145 – State Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Susan Eggman (D-Stockton)

With their Senate Bill 145, California Democrats Senator Wiener and Assemblymember Eggman state they are trying to shield LGBT young people from having to automatically register as sex offenders for specified sex crimes. But the bill they have introduced does much more than that.

SB 145 would allow a sex offender who lures a minor with the intent to commit a felony (i.e. a sex act) the ability to escape registering as a sex offender as long as the offender is within 10 years of age of the minor. No specification is made as to whether the sexual offender is straight or LGBT.

The issue here is that the author’s press release states the bill is intended to bring parity in who has to register as a sex offender and who doesn’t, stipulating that: “SB 145 does not apply to intercourse of any kind with minors who are age 14 or younger. For those crimes, mandatory sex offender registration will continue to be the case for all forms of intercourse.” But the actual text of the bill goes much further than that.

As written, SB 145 would add a section to the state’s penal code (Section 290.55) stipulating that as long as the offender is “not more than 10 years older than the minor,” they are not automatically mPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

The rise of generative AI has triggered a global race to build semiconductor plants and data centers to feed the vast energy demands of large language models. But as investment surges and valuations soar, a growing body of evidence suggests that financial speculation is outpacing productivity gains.

CAMBRIDGE – In recent weeks, the notion that we are witnessing an “AI Bubble” has moved from the fringes of public debate to the mainstream. As Financial Times commentator Katie Martin aptly put it, “Bubble-talk is breaking out everywhere.”

The debate is fueled by a surge of investment in data centers and in the vast energy infrastructure required to train and operate the large language models (LLMs) that drive generative AI. As with previous speculative bubbles, rising investment volumes fuel soaring valuations, with both reaching historic highs across public and private markets. The so-called “Magnificent Seven” tech giants – Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla – dominate the S&P 500, with each boasting a market capitalization above $1 trillion, and Nvidia is now the world’s first $5 trillion company. In the private market, OpenAI reportedly plans to raise $30 billion at a $500 billion valuation from SoftBank, the most exuberant investor of the post-2008 era. Notably, this fundraising round comes even as the company’s losses totaled $5 billion in 2024 despite $3.7 billion in revenue with its cash burn expected to total $115 billion through 2029. DHS Wants States to Hand Over Driver’s License Data for Citizenship Checks

It’s the latest step in an unprecedented initiative to pool confidential data that the Trump administration claims will help identify noncitizens on voter rolls and tighten immigration enforcement.

The Department of Homeland Security says it intends to add state driver’s license information to a swiftly expanding federal system envisioned as a one-stop shop for checking citizenship.

The plan, outlined in a public notice posted Thursday, is the latest step in an unprecedented Trump administration initiative to pool confidential data from varied sources that it claims will help identify noncitizens on voter rolls, tighten immigration enforcement and expose public benefit fraud.

According to emails obtained by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune, DHS approached Texas officials in June about a pilot program to add the state’s driver license data, but it’s not clear if the state participated.

Earlier this year, DHS added millions of Americans’ Social Security data to the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE, system, allowing officials to use the tool to conduct bulk searches of voter rolls for the first time. According to the document filed Thursday, SAVE also recently expanded to include passport and visa information.

Incorporating driver’s license information would allow election officials whose rolls don’t include voters’ Social Security numbers to conduct bulk searches by driver’s license number.
