Producer Price Indexes - September 2026
The Producer Price Index for final demand increased 1.3 percent in September, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Final demand prices moved up 0.5 percent in August and 0.2 percent in July. (See table A.) The September increase is the largest advance since rising 1.7 percent in March 2022. On an unadjusted basis, the index for final demand climbed 6.3 percent for the 12 months ended in September, the largest 12-month increase since moving up 6.4 percent in December 2022.
In September, prices for final demand goods rose 2.6 percent, and the index for final demand services advanced 0.8 percent.
Prices for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services moved up 0.5 percent in September after increasing 0.3 percent in August. For the 12 months ended in September, the index for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services rose 5.0 percent.
Final Demand
Final demand goods: Prices for final demand goods advanced 2.6 percent in September, the largest increase since data were first calculated in December 2009. Over 80 percent of the broad-based rise in September is attributable to the index for final demand energy, which jumped 10.8 percent. Prices for final demand foods and for final demand goods less foods and energy advanced 1.2 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for September 2026, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $745.0 billion, up 0.8 percent (±0.4 percent) from the previous month, and up 6.3 percent (±0.5 percent) from September 2025. Total sales for the July 2026 through September 2026 period were up 5.5 percent (±0.5 percent) from the same period a year ago. The July 2026 to August 2026 percent change was revised from up 1.1 percent (±0.4 percent) to up 1.3 percent (±0.1 percent).
