BREAKING: Six Kansas election races are now headed for close-race audits after Tuesday’s election.
Secretary of State Scott Schwab ordered audits in contests decided by less than 1% of the vote, including Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and three House districts.
County officials will hand-count ballots in 10% of precincts and compare the results with tabulator counts.
The audits are required under Kansas law and are separate from the routine post-election audit.
Final certification is still pending.

Trump’s Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy Supercharges American Dominance in Commercial Space
Thursday, November 5, 2026
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy today announced four key regulatory actions by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to streamline commercial space launch and reentry licensing along with plans for a major regulatory overhaul in 2027.
The Department also announced a hiring initiative to supercharge the agency’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation.
The actions cut regulatory burdens and enhance operational flexibility without compromising FAA safety standards:
Proposed Rule: Defines when a flight abort isn’t mandatory and allows operators to toggle abort capability during flight.
Proposed Rule: Clarifies requirements and thresholds for when an abort must occur.
Proposed Rule: Lets operators account for vehicle breakup to rule out high-consequence multi-casualty events during random reentry.
Final Rule: Applies minor technical corrections across commercial space rules.
“President Trump is supercharging America’s booming commercial space industry making it more innovative and safer than ever before,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy.
“That includes getting rid of the outdated rules that hold innovators back, recruiting the best and brightest aerospace engineers, and unleashing American space dominance while never compromising on safety.”
Looking ahead, the FAA will initiate a comprehensive overhaul of its licensing framework in 2027 to keep pace with rapid commercial space innovation and support an anticipated cadence of 1,000 launches per year by 2030.
To support this mission, the agency is expanding its Office of Commercial Space Transportation workforce with an Associate Administrator and a new team of aerospace engineers.
These engineers will conduct safety analysis, evaluations, and mission authorizations to accelerate application turnaround while keeping the public safe during space operations. Applications must be received by December 4.
“The SPACE Task Force is moving at warp speed to support President Trump’s goal of continuing America’s dominance in space,” said U.S. Under Secretary for Transportation Ryan McCormack.
“We’re leaving no stone unturned to safely reform licensing and environmental regulations, identify new spaceport locations, create priority airspace for space launches, and hire the workforce to make it all a reality."
“We are clearing the regulatory runway for an unprecedented golden age of commercial spaceflight,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.
“And we have great job opportunities on our licensing team to play a direct and integral role in shaping the future of American space innovation.”
The U.S. was responsible for 217 of the 329 commercial space launches worldwide in 2025 and we expect to see that number will soar to 10,000 FAA-licensed launches and reentries a year by 2035.
Additional Information:
These actions build on the five proposed rules that Secretary Duffy announced last month, which were developed in concert with the recently launched USDOT Space Policy Administration, Coordination, and Execution (SPACE) Task Force, as well as President Trump’s space policy goals in his Enabling Competition in the Commercial Space Industry Executive Order and National Space Transportation Policy.
The FAA also issued a proposed rule that would allow the agency to waive unnecessary environmental laws and regulations that are impeding American space innovation.
In addition, the FAA is asking the public and industry for ideas on two big issues: where to build new spaceports and creating “priority airspace” for space-launch routes.

The Pentagon’s smallest service is trying to rebuild its civilian workforce following the Trump administration’s push to slash federal jobs.
The Space Force wants its civilian employees to embrace their identity as guardians, adding new training and professional development in pursuit of a shared service culture.
“There are going to be times where you’re going to be the only guardian in the room,” Chief of Space Operations Gen. Doug Schiess said Wednesday at an event hosted by the Air and Space Forces Association.
“They’re going to look at you … and go, ‘You’re a guardian. Can you help me with my problems?’”
“They’re not caring what you’ve done before, so we’ve got to make sure that you know what it’s like to be a guardian first,” he said.
The service could follow a similar path as it created for uniformed troops. That approach aims to create well-rounded service members with experience in acquisition and operations alike, rather than spending a career focused on one area.
Because Space Force civilians are technically employed by the broader Department of the Air Force, Schiess said, they may work for the Air Force before moving to the new service.
The Space Force now offers courses to show civilian workers how the sister services differ and to forge a stronger sense of belonging in the nearly 7-year-old organization.
The service is also mulling what professional military education civilian guardians may need in the future, and how it might dovetail with the training troops receive as they rise through the ranks.
Employees can already sharpen their leadership, management and national security skills through Air Force-run schools like the Air War College and Air Command and Staff College.
As part of that effort, the Space Force is considering creating a new role to support the service as part of the Department of the Air Force’s secretariat staff, a move that would give civilian guardians a greater voice in high-level discussions on workforce needs and quality of life.
Schiess said Wednesday the service is looking at what experience that official may need to “thoroughly know the Space Force” and represent it alongside other senior leaders.
It’s unclear how the position would differ from that of the assistant secretary for space acquisition and integration, which is already part of the Air Force secretariat.
Civilians make up about one-third of the Space Force, more than in any other branch of the military. The Pentagon’s smallest service is trying to rebuild that workforce following the Trump administration’s push to slash federal jobs.
The service is asking Congress to fund around 7,200 civilian jobs in 2027, a 40% bump over 2026, to staff a burgeoning slate of missions from communications relay to missile warning to offensive cyber operations.
Schiess indicated that adding civilians would help the service grow the component organizations that provide spacepower to combat commands around the world. That plan partially depends on congressional cooperation in the years ahead.
The service has requested more than $71 billion for fiscal 2027. Though lawmakers may differ on how to pursue military space operations, Schiess said, “no one’s really pushed back on the stuff that we need.”
“We’re gonna add 2,800 guardians and 2,000 civilians in ‘27 if the budget comes through,” he said. “Those will be put across [the service] as we bring on new capabilities for weapon systems, but also, a lot of that will go into our components.”
