Kremlin responds to Melania Trump’s Ukraine talks plan

The US first lady is set to host Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House on Thursday, according to Washington

The Kremlin has said it has no information on who will represent Russia at a White House meeting with Ukrainian officials hosted by US First Lady Melania Trump on Thursday.

The White House announced on Tuesday that Melania Trump would personally bring representatives of Moscow and Kiev together,without identifying the participants or providing details of the meeting’s agenda.

“First Lady Melania Trump will personally bring representatives of Russia and Ukraine, two nations actively at war, together at the White House,” the statement said.

“I have no information about it,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters when asked about the announcement.

The US first lady is also expected to deliver remarks on Thursday about a temporary humanitarian ceasefire in the frontline town of Alyoshki, which she helped broker.

Located in Russia’s Kherson Region along the Dnieper River, Alyoshki has suffered severe shortages after months of supply disruptions caused by Ukrainian drone attacks and mines, according to Russian officials.

An estimated 1,500 to 2,000 residents had been running critically low on food, water, medicine and fuel before the six-day ceasefire took effect last Tuesday. The truce expired on Sunday.

Russian and Ukrainian humanitarian teams used the pause in fighting to deliver essential supplies and evacuate civilians. Nearly 800 people were brought out of the town, Melania Trump said on Monday. Moscow and Kiev agreed not to disclose where the evacuees were taken.

Residents who spoke to RT described Ukrainian bombardments that destroyed homes and accused Kiev of treating them as “scum” and “traitors.”

This is what Covid looked like in week 1. A few banks. A few apps. Nobody called it a crisis.

1/ France: more than €118 million (about $133 million) was pulled out of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa over several days and turned into crypto. Today its app was down and EVERY transfer was blocked. The bank says customers lose nothing.

2/ Belgium: on October 28, the federal finance ministry said a cyberattack hit it. The online tax portal was SHUT and tax deadlines will be pushed back.

3/ Eurozone: on October 22, the European Central Bank, the bank behind the euro, confirmed that attackers planted malware on one of its websites.

4/ South Korea: at least 9 banks targeted since late September by an attacker using an AI hacking agent. At Shinhan Bank alone, about 25,000 customers had their names, phone numbers, incomes and loan limits exposed.

5/ Japan: hackers broke into GMO Internet and demanded $50 million in crypto. The prime minister promised an emergency anti-cyberattack package.

6/ At least 14 countries: China-linked hackers used AI agents to attack 200+ organisations in just 11 days. Finance was on the target list.

7/ Crypto: more than $6 billion drained from Binance hot wallets on 11 blockchains on October 29, most of it in about 30 minutes. The FBI says North Korea did it.

Now zoom out.

Hackers now send AI agents to do the work. The French money left over several days before the bank confirmed anything. Fake IDs passed the crypto exchanges' checks. About $63 million in stablecoins became 27,553 Ether in 4 hours. Part of it vanished into Monero, a coin built to hide who sends and who receives.

Covid locked the streets. This time the lock is on the bank app, and €118 million is already gone. Nobody is calling this a crisis yet. But central bankers already plan for the day the hackers get in.

The G7 agreed to run drills that simulate AI attacks on banks. The ECB gave eurozone banks until October 31 to hand in AI cyber defence plans. And last month the IMF chief warned we may end up with "lots of people with shoeboxes under their beds."

Democrats for the first time in 16 years have a majority of governors running states, after Tuesday night's midterm elections in which they took five seats occupied by Republicans.

Thirty-six states held governor races. Democrats flipped governorships in Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada and Texas. Republicans entered Tuesday’s elections with a 26-24 majority. The tally as of Wednesday morning stands at 28-20 for Democrats, with Alaska and Kansas still undecided.

The biggest upset Tuesday night was in Texas, where three-term GOP Gov. Greg Abbott lost 52.9-to-45.6% to state Rep. Gina Hinojosa. The win was part of Democrats' wave-election dominance in which they also took the House and Senate majority.

In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson for an open, GOP-held seat. She becomes the state's first female and Black governor. The seat was open because GOP Gov. Brian Kemp could not run again because of term limits.

In Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, in what was arguably the most contentious race of the midterm cycle.

The victory by Acton, a physician who was Ohio’s COVID-era health director, marks the first time since 2006 that a Democrat has been elected as governor, according to the Associated Press.

Ramaswamy, a 2024 presidential candidate and biotech billionaire, was endorsed by President Donald Trump. His ad featuring Acton's estranged mother was widely criticized by Acton supporters and others.

Iowa was one of the final races to be called overnight. The wire service declared Democrat Rob Sands the winner over the GOP's Zach Lahn. Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds did not seek reelection.

The other race in which Democrats won a GOP-held seat was in Nevada, where Democrat Aaron Ford, the state's attorney general, defeated Republican incumbent Gov. Joe Lombardo.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Sandia National Laboratory is studying how nuclear X-ray blasts could help deflect an asteroid headed to Earth, nudging it off course and saving the planet.

Researcher Nathan Moore said older simulations used a sphere to represent a possible asteroid, which made the math easier, but most asteroids are actually lumpy, irregular shapes.

Now, scientists are using new simulations to figure out how to push an oddly-shaped object off course, without exploding it completely, as that could still send deadly pieces down to Earth.

Sandia Labs published the findings in the scientific journal Icarus last month, reducing the guesswork needed to avoid doomsday.

GISTDA expects NASA’s Swift observatory to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere near Niger at about 5.47pm on November 4, with very low risk to Thailand.

Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) has forecast that NASA’s Swift satellite will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere near Niger in Africa on November 4, 2026, while assessing the risk to Thailand as extremely low.

The agency reassured the public that there was no immediate cause for concern and that people could continue their daily activities as normal.

According to GISTDA’s latest calculations, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is expected to re-enter the atmosphere at approximately 5.47pm Thailand time, with a margin of uncertainty of 2.5 hours on either side.

This places the estimated re-entry window between 3.17pm and 8.17pm.

The forecast identifies an area around Niger in Africa as the possible location where surviving satellite fragments could fall, far from Thailand.

GISTDA continues monitoring satellite trajectory

GISTDA’s Space Technology Research Center (S-TREC) has been using its GARNET and ZIRCON systems to monitor Swift’s orbit and assess its projected re-entry trajectory.

The agency will continue analysing orbital data as the spacecraft approaches Earth, with the timing and potential impact area subject to change as updated information becomes available.

GISTDA pledged to inform the public promptly if its assessment changes.

The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a NASA space telescope weighing approximately 1.47 tonnes, has been steadily losing altitude because of atmospheric drag.

Most of the spacecraft’s structure is expected to disintegrate and burn up as it passes through Earth’s atmosphere.

However, some components may survive the intense heat of re-entry and reach the planet’s surface.

GISTDA maintained that the latest assessment indicated a very low likelihood of debris affecting Thailand, while emphasising that monitoring would continue until the satellite’s re-entry is complete.

China's space station exposure platform delivers original results: expert

China has completed multiple batches of in-orbit experiments on material and biological samples using its space station's extravehicular exposure platform, achieving a number of original results, according to Pang Zhihao, a chief science communication expert on space exploration technology.

The space station is currently carrying out its fourth round of extravehicular exposure experiments, covering eight scientific projects and 26 sample units, with exposure periods of one to two years.

"Extravehicular exposure experiments place material and biological samples on platforms outside the space station, exposing them directly to the real space environment," said Pang in an interview with Science and Technology Daily.

The samples are subjected to high vacuum, atomic oxygen erosion, cosmic radiation, sharp temperature fluctuations and micrometeoroid impacts. After a period of in-orbit testing, they are retrieved by astronauts or a robotic arm and returned to Earth for analysis, Pang revealed.

According to the expert, in materials research, China has completed the world's first in-orbit verification of the space stability of a stainless magnesium alloy, confirming its advantages of being both lightweight and radiation-resistant.

It also conducted solid-liquid composite lubrication and gel lubrication friction tests outside the station, achieving near-zero wear.

Meanwhile, simulated lunar soil bricks remained intact after one year of exposure to extreme space conditions, verifying the feasibility of using such materials for lunar surface construction, Pang said.

In the field of biology, China conducted extravehicular exposure experiments on extremophile microorganisms and nematodes, and data on radiation damage and life tolerance were obtained, providing a basis for the exploration of extraterrestrial life and the assessment of radiation risks to astronauts.

Japan space probe aims to capture its 1st Mercury images next spring

Japan's Mercury probe Mio, part of the Japan-Europe joint Mercury exploration mission BepiColombo, is on course to attempt to take its first images of Mercury next spring after arriving at the planet later this month, sources close to the matter said Wednesday.

It is expected to capture Mercury's tenuous sodium atmosphere and possibly its terrain, marking the start of preparations for full-scale scientific observations after a 10-billion-kilometer journey over roughly eight years.

Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun, is exposed to extreme temperatures and remains difficult to reach because of the Sun's strong gravitational pull, leaving it relatively unexplored.

BepiColombo is the world's first mission in which two spacecraft, separately developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the European Space Agency, will orbit Mercury simultaneously.

Equipped with special heat-protection systems, the spacecraft will conduct observations from different orbits.

Mio was launched from Kourou in French Guiana in October 2018 attached to Europe's Mercury Planetary Orbiter, or MPO, on an Ariane 5 rocket.

Reaching Mercury requires a huge amount of energy and the mission carried out nine gravity-assist maneuvers, known as swing-bys, to alter its trajectory and speed while conserving fuel.

The mission's planned arrival, originally scheduled for December 2025, was delayed by a year due to propulsion system problems.

The sole imaging instrument aboard Mio is the Mercury Sodium Atmospheric Spectral Imager. After separating from MPO in early December this year, Mio will photograph Mercury and its surroundings and transmit the images using its own antenna.

The camera is designed to detect light emitted by sodium atoms drifting around the planet, allowing scientists to visualize the extent and variability of Mercury's atmosphere.

The structure of the sodium atmosphere is difficult to observe from Earth because of interference from sunlight, and researchers hope Mio's images will help reveal its behavior.

Project scientist Go Murakami, an associate professor at JAXA, said the team will carefully verify that all equipment is functioning properly before conducting test imaging around March next year.

"We hope the images will be transmitted safely back to Earth," he said.

Murakami said the mission's primary objectives include studying how Mercury formed and evolved, investigating the mechanisms behind its internal magnetic field, and looking into how well the planet's environment can be sustained under intense solar winds, which could offer clues to understanding the birth of Earth and about environments capable of supporting life. Full-scale scientific observations are scheduled to begin in April next year.

Presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky will head the Russian team at the upcoming trilateral talks on the Ukraine conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

The next round of negotiations between Russian, American and Ukrainian delegations is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11.

Medinsky remains “the chief negotiator in this process on the Russian side,” Peskov told journalists on Tuesday.

According to the Kremlin spokesman, the delegation would also include “representatives of various departments, including the Foreign Ministry.”

The exact composition of the team has yet to be determined by Russian President Vladimir Putin, he added.

Medinsky is a veteran negotiator, who had led the Russian delegations in numerous rounds of talks, both during the initial 2022 negotiations in Türkiye and during the many stages of the American-mediated peace process which US President Donald Trump launched after returning to the White House in early 2025. He was also responsible for securing the Istanbul deal, which would have ended the conflict back in 2022, had Kiev not walked away from the negotiating table at the time at the suggestion of then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Moscow’s teams had also previously included Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Deputy Defense Minister Aleksandr Fomin and the head of Russia’s military intelligence, Admiral Igor Kostyukov, as well as Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who heads Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, Peskov added. Kostyukov also led the group at two rounds of US-mediated negotiations in Abu Dhabi in early 2026 when the talks were focused on military logistics and prisoner exchanges.

Moscow’s announcement came as US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described the specifics of the new round of peace negotiations.

The working-level meeting would focus on “post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, humanitarian efforts, and next steps toward peace,” he wrote in a post on X on Tuesday.

Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will join Witkoff in leading the American delegation, Axios reported, citing US officials.

Moscow and Kiev held several rounds of US-mediated talks in the UAE and Switzerland earlier this year, but the process was disrupted by the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, launched in late February.

Washington revived its diplomatic efforts in September, initially through separate meetings with Moscow and Kiev. Witkoff also said American negotiators would meet officials from France, Germany, the UK, the EU, and NATO in Brussels this week to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, Europe’s post-war security architecture, and economic opportunities for reconstruction.

Kiev’s European backers have been increasingly demanding a place at the negotiating table over the past months.

Moscow has ruled out their direct participation in the upcoming trilateral talks, arguing that they had squandered their credibility as mediators through their failure to uphold previous peace agreements, including the Minsk accords.

Moscow hopes US President Donald Trump will press ahead with efforts to end the Ukraine conflict despite the Republicans’ defeat in the midterm elections, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Peskov was asked whether the Democrats’ takeover of both chambers of Congress could derail dialogue between Moscow and Washington.

“President Trump remains in office, and we sincerely hope that he will continue his peace-making efforts,” Peskov said. “There has been progress, and another round of trilateral talks is coming very soon.”

Asked whether the new Congress could obstruct Trump’s diplomatic initiatives, Peskov declined to speculate, describing the matter as “America’s internal affair.”

The remarks came a day after Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, ending Republican dominance of Congress. The new legislature will take office in January 2027.

Russia, Ukraine, and the US are scheduled to resume trilateral peace negotiations in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11. Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky will lead Moscow’s delegation. Peskov said the talks would address mutual security guarantees, with details to be discussed behind closed doors.

In a separate interview on Tuesday, Peskov stressed that security guarantees could only be mutual and reiterated Moscow’s position that one country’s security must not come at another’s expense.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff said earlier the talks would focus on de-escalation and humanitarian measures.

Peskov has also praised US First Lady Melania Trump’s humanitarian initiatives. She recently helped broker a six-day humanitarian ceasefire in the frontline town of Alyoshki in Russia’s Kherson Region. Humanitarian teams from both Russia and Ukraine used the pause in fighting to deliver essential supplies and evacuate nearly 800 civilians.

The first lady is expected to bring Russian and Ukrainian representatives together at the White House on Thursday to discuss the humanitarian initiative.

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Moscow’s position on Ukraine and its broader foreign policy would remain unchanged regardless of political developments in the US. He also described the Democratic Party leadership’s approach toward Russia as “strongly negative.”

Presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky will head the Russian team at the upcoming trilateral talks on the Ukraine conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said. The next round of negotiations between Russian, American and Ukrainian delegations is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11.

Medinsky remains “the chief negotiator in this process on the Russian side,” Peskov told journalists on Tuesday. According to the Kremlin spokesman, the delegation would also include “representatives of various departments, including the Foreign Ministry.” The exact composition of the team has yet to be determined by Russian President Vladimir Putin, he added.

Medinsky is a veteran negotiator, who had led the Russian delegations in numerous rounds of talks, both during the initial 2022 negotiations in Türkiye and during the many stages of the American-mediated peace process which US President Donald Trump launched after returning to the White House in early 2025.

He was also responsible for securing the Istanbul deal, which would have ended the conflict back in 2022, had Kiev not walked away from the negotiating table at the time at the suggestion of then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Moscow’s teams had also previously included Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Deputy Defense Minister Aleksandr Fomin and the head of Russia’s military intelligence, Admiral Igor Kostyukov, as well as Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who heads Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, Peskov added. Kostyukov also led the group at two rounds of US-mediated negotiations in Abu Dhabi in early 2026 when the talks were focused on military logistics and prisoner exchanges.

Moscow’s announcement came as US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described the specifics of the new round of peace negotiations. The working-level meeting would focus on “post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, humanitarian efforts, and next steps toward peace,” he wrote in a post on X on Tuesday. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will join Witkoff in leading the American delegation, Axios reported, citing US officials.

Moscow and Kiev held several rounds of US-mediated talks in the UAE and Switzerland earlier this year, but the process was disrupted by the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, launched in late February. Washington revived its diplomatic efforts in September, initially through separate meetings with Moscow and Kiev.

Witkoff also said American negotiators would meet officials from France, Germany, the UK, the EU, and NATO in Brussels this week to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, Europe’s post-war security architecture, and economic opportunities for reconstruction.

Kiev’s European backers have been increasingly demanding a place at the negotiating table over the past months. Moscow has ruled out their direct participation in the upcoming trilateral talks, arguing that they had squandered their credibility as mediators through their failure to uphold previous peace agreements, including the Minsk accords.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (RINO-SD) took to social media late Tuesday night after Republicans suffered heavy losses in the 2026 midterms, claiming a “strong record of accomplishment” on safer streets, tax cuts, border security, and judicial confirmations.

Conservative commentator Mike Cernovich, election-integrity attorney Cleta Mitchell, and other prominent voices blasted Thune for failing to advance President Donald Trump’s legislative priorities, particularly the SAVE America Act, despite Republicans controlling the White House and both chambers of Congress.

Democrats have secured control of the U.S. Senate, flipping at least seven Republican-held seats, including victories in Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

The Democratic Party also captured the House, delivering a devastating blow to President Trump’s congressional agenda ahead of 2027.

Yet Thune appeared determined to celebrate his record.

In a lengthy statement posted to X following Tuesday’s election, Thune declared:

“Over the last two years, Senate Republicans have put up a strong record of accomplishment that’s created safer streets, more money in Americans’ pockets, and new opportunities for families and businesses to get ahead.

After fighting Democrat obstruction at every turn, we prevented the largest tax hike in American history, secured our border in an unprecedented way, confirmed the president’s Cabinet at the fastest pace in two decades, and put strong conservative judges on benches across the country faster than we have since the Reagan administration.

I’m proud of our team and everything we’ve done for the American people, and I’m looking forward to the important work we have in front of us over the next few months.

As we head into 2027, Senate Republicans will not stand idly by as the far-left, socialist wing of the Democrat Party attempts to unwind everything we’ve done.

Thankfully, we still have President Trump in the White House, and we’ll work with him to stop the worst impulses of Democrat extremism. We cannot let their fringe positions become the mainstream.”

Conservative commentator Mike Cernovich issued one of the harshest responses, accusing the Senate majority leader of squandering Republican control of Congress.

Cernovich wrote:
